Eira barbara barbara
Appearance
Eira barbara barbara is a name used for a subspecies of the tayra, a member of the weasel family. Its name originated with Linnaeus in 1758, in the combination Mustela barbara. The nomenclatural record associates its type locality with Brazil; later taxonomic work restricted the type locality to Pernambuco.[1]
The repeated species epithet identifies the nominate subspecies: the subspecies containing the name-bearing type of the species.[1]
The name appears in the Mammal Diversity Database’s 2026 subspecies list. The tayra account explains the competing classifications; a skull study challenged the traditional boundaries.[2]
