Eira barbara inserta
Appearance
Eira barbara inserta is a name used for a subspecies of the tayra, a member of the weasel family. Its name originated with J. A. Allen in 1908, in the combination Tayra barbara inserta. The nomenclatural record associates its type locality with Uluce, in Matagalpa, Nicaragua.[1]
The name appears in the Mammal Diversity Database’s 2026 subspecies list. The tayra account explains the competing classifications; a skull study challenged the traditional boundaries.[2]
