Eira barbara peruana
Appearance
Eira barbara peruana is a name used for a subspecies of the tayra, a member of the weasel family. Its name originated with Alfred Nehring in 1886, in the combination Galictis barbara peruana. The nomenclatural record associates its type locality with Peru.[1]
The current nomenclatural record attributes the available name to Nehring in 1886. It treats Tschudi’s earlier 1844 use as a nomen nudum: a published name that did not then meet the requirements for availability. Older references can therefore give a different author and date.[1]
The name appears in the Mammal Diversity Database’s 2026 subspecies list. The tayra account explains the competing classifications; a skull study challenged the traditional boundaries.[2]
