Eira barbara poliocephala

From Tilcayo Cats, the lean encyclopaedia by Tilcayo Knowledge Systems

Eira barbara poliocephala is a name used for a subspecies of the tayra, a member of the weasel family. Its name originated with Thomas Stewart Traill in 1821, in the combination Viverra poliocephalus. The nomenclatural record associates its type locality with Demerara, in present-day Guyana.[1]

The name appears in the Mammal Diversity Database’s 2026 subspecies list. The tayra account explains the competing classifications; a skull study challenged the traditional boundaries.[2]
