Eira barbara senex
Appearance
Eira barbara senex is a name used for a subspecies of the tayra, a member of the weasel family. Its name originated with Oldfield Thomas in 1900, in the combination Galictis barbara senex. The nomenclatural record associates its type locality with Hacienda Tortugas near Jalapa, Veracruz, Mexico.[1]
The name appears in the Mammal Diversity Database’s 2026 subspecies list. The tayra account explains the competing classifications; a skull study challenged the traditional boundaries.[2]
