Eira barbara senilis

From Tilcayo Cats, the lean encyclopaedia by Tilcayo Knowledge Systems

Eira barbara senilis is a name used for a subspecies of the tayra, a member of the weasel family. Its name originated with J. A. Allen in 1913, in the combination Tayra barbara senilis. The nomenclatural record associates its type locality with Río de Oro, Manabí, Ecuador.[1]

Allen published the name in “New mammals from Colombia and Ecuador”, on page 484.[1]

The name appears in the Mammal Diversity Database’s 2026 subspecies list. The tayra account explains the competing classifications; a skull study challenged the traditional boundaries.[2]
