Murina jinchui

From Tilcayo Cats, the lean encyclopaedia by Tilcayo Knowledge Systems

Murina jinchui, or Jinchu's tube-nosed bat, is a small bat described in 2020 from Wolong National Nature Reserve in Sichuan, China. It was named for the panda researcher Jinchu Hu.[1]

Appearance and discovery

The described bats have grey-brown upper fur, a greyer underside and rounded ears. Their forearms measure 32.4–36.4 mm. Skull and tooth characters, together with mitochondrial and nuclear DNA, distinguished them from similar tube-nosed bats.[1]

The specimens were collected in 2014 near the Hetaoping Giant Panda Training Base, at approximately 1,800 metres above sea level. Harp traps caught them in moist forest containing evergreen and deciduous broadleaved trees.[1]

At publication, the species was known only from that locality. The researchers considered their capture frequency inconsistent with it being locally rare, but this was not a population estimate or a conservation assessment. The Mammal Diversity Database continues to recognise the species and records its distribution in China.[1][2]
