Polybius

From Tilcayo Cats, the lean encyclopaedia by Tilcayo Knowledge Systems

Polybius was a historian from Achaea who wrote about the rise of Rome.

Life

Polybius was one of the Achaean hostages sent to Italy, where they stayed for 17 years.[1] After 145 BC he advised the Roman commission that organised Achaea as a province.[2]

Histories

Polybius wrote a history which aimed to show how Rome rose to power in the 53 years from 220 to 167 BC.[3] In his view, Rome's constitution was the deciding factor in its rise.[3] His Histories also include a long account of the Roman army.[4]
