Research notes and checks (24 October 2026)

The following points about this article's sources still need checking:

  • New 24 October 2026, mainly from Craig Smith (2020), a living author used only as a source; Bhagwati (2014) note 15 adds one point. The opening description (Scottish philosopher and writer on economics) is a plain summary. The glosses of writer to the signet, jurisprudence and division of labour are the drafter's.
  • DEATH NOT STATED: the book (sections read) gives no death date. The article says only that his mother died six years before him (note 4) and that he was in poor health by 1790 (note 29). The report summary dates her death to 1784, which would imply 1790, but the book's words do not say so. A checked source is needed before a death date or place is added.
  • Some details rest on the researcher's report summaries rather than the quoted text: 'where he began work on the Wealth of Nations' (note 23), the Duke of Buccleuch (note 19), and the Wealth of Nations publication year (note 24; the article only implies 1776 through note 25). Rector in 1787 and Panmure House are not used. Check these against the pages.
  • Views attributed: Oxford as a disappointment, morality as felt, his character (Craig Smith); retaliatory tariffs (Bhagwati, note 15, page ±1, partial quotation, paraphrased). 'Invisible hand' and 'father of economics' are short phrases of three words or fewer.
  • Dullien et al. (2018) does not mention Adam Smith. In Bhagwati, only note 15 does.
  • The page-marker convention was inferred by the reader; pages may be off by one at section starts.
  • Craig Smith is cited as Polity Press, Classic Thinkers series, 2020, ISBN 978-1-5095-1823-4 (pb), as printed on the copyright page. Perlego matches (Polity, 2020); no mismatch. The author is living and is used only as a source.
  • Bhagwati is cited as Princeton University Press, 2014, ISBN 9781400861590, as in the existing economy note.
  • No |location= or access-date is cited.
  • Quotation marks are used only for full-sentence exact quotations, or for terms of three words or fewer found in the notes.
  • Neutral, family-friendly: the subject died centuries ago; no graphic violence; no living people, active companies or current products are named.
  • The category Category:People has not been checked against the live wiki, nor have the See also links.
  • All notes cited are marked 'Not checked' against the printed book.
