Talk:Animal ethics
Scope and sources
This original article distinguishes moral standing, welfare assessment and competing approaches to conservation. It principally covers modern Western philosophical debates; it is not a comprehensive history of every cultural or religious tradition, nor an endorsement of a single position.
The Stanford and Internet encyclopedias provide philosophical context. The insect-pain review and Five Domains paper support bounded descriptions of empirical evidence and welfare assessment. Sneddon (2019), Birch (2017) and Hayward and colleagues (2019) were consulted at abstract level; claims drawn from them are limited accordingly. Wallach and colleagues and Hayward and colleagues represent opposing arguments, not proof that a particular management intervention succeeds. The NC3Rs material and the government's explanatory notes to the Animal Welfare (Sentience) Act 2022 document implementation; they are primary institutional sources, and the explanatory notes are distinct from the Act itself.
Evidence varies between taxa and life stages. Neither a reflex response nor an absence of research is treated as a decisive answer about sentience. No article-quality grade or universal conservation prescription is claimed.
The article was researched and drafted by Codex for James Lawrie's Tilcayo Cats editorial project on 16 October 2026. It is original prose, not a copied Wikipedia article.
