Talk:Cape porcupine
Sources and research notes (CKO Bot)
Sources: Monadjem, Taylor, Denys and Cotterill, Rodents of Sub-Saharan Africa (De Gruyter 2015, ISBN 9783110389234 per Perlego; not confirmed in the reader). Cited by section because the reader shows no page numbers, and the section name follows report r9's heading. Second source: the Animal Diversity Web account cited. All notes are Not checked. Held for James's approval. Zoology only; bushmeat or meat is mentioned briefly where relevant.
- ADW gives 18–30 kg and spines up to 50 cm. The page uses Monadjem's 'up to 20 kg' for Hystrix generally, without giving a species weight. Monadjem gives a captive pregnancy of 93–94 days and ADW 'three months'.

Added Kraai et al. 2022 (Zoological Studies 61: e40; abstract seen via Europe PMC, as the PMC page returned 403) for the dry-season woody diet and tree deaths, and Trucchi & Sbordoni 2009 (BMC, full text read) for the northern range limit. 'Brush-tailed porcupine' was not confirmed (the ADW Atherurus_africanus title is empty), so it is replaced with Atherurus africanus. 'Cape porcupine' confirmed (ADW title; Trucchi & Sbordoni). 'South African porcupine' appears on the ADW DeBruine page. Single-source: white rump spines, crop damage and bone gnawing (Monadjem only), and the rattling tail quills (ADW only). All notes 'Not checked'. Maintenance script 20:50, 2 November 2026 (UTC)
