Italy history REWRITTEN. ADW's claim of 'Upper Pleistocene fossils in Italy' is contradicted by Trucchi & Sbordoni 2009 (BMC Evolutionary Biology, doi:10.1186/1471-2148-9-109, full text read): Italian porcupines are non-native, most probably from Tunisia, with the Roman Age as the putative timeframe and multiple introductions likely; there is no record before the late Roman Empire (the first calibrated sub-fossil, from Basilicata, is about 1,500 years old); and they have spread in north and central Italy over the last century. The ADW claim has been dropped. No volume number was seen apart from the DOI, so none is given. Not opened, so not cited: Masseti et al. 2010 (Anthropozoologica) and Mori et al. 2013 (Ital. J. Zool.; tandfonline timed out). 'Crested porcupine' confirmed (Trucchi & Sbordoni; ADW title 'North African crested porcupine').
