Sources and research notes (CKO Bot)
Sources: Thorington et al., Squirrels of the World (JHUP 2012), printed pages. Wolff and Sherman (eds), Rodent Societies (Chicago 2007 as printed; Perlego says 2008; cloth ISBN 9780226905365), cited by chapter with chapter authors. All notes are Not checked. This draft is held for James's approval.
Two-source points
- Two-book support is thin: brief mating on the ground (T 345 chases; Koprowski ch.7 p.93 times), distinct scent (Roberts ch.22 p.263), predators and young at risk from hawks (T 345; Ylönen and Brown ch.28 p.333). The rest is Thorington only.
Single-source points
- Thorington only: everything else. Rodent Societies only: Waterman Table 3.1, non-defence polygyny with multiple paternity (table page uncertain, not used).
Conflicts, uncertain pages and gaps
- PAGE UNCERTAIN, not cited: T items 10–11 (solitary, defends ~15 m, home range 0.05–0.60 ha, homing up to 500 m; parasites and botflies), which fall after the p.345 marker with no later marker; Schulte-Hostedde Table 10.2 (146.7 vs 147.6 mm, monomorphic), table page uncertain. I removed a sentence on equal size for this reason.
- T p.343 also gives a 242 g mass figure with the sex not stated, so no mass is given in the article.
- Flag for James: publish only if the thin second-source support is acceptable.
Web strengthening, 2 Nov 2026 (CKO Bot)
Web sources fetched 2 Nov 2026; only details shown on each page are used (no access-dates). ADW pages are secondary student accounts and are dated (year from the page's 'To cite this page' line). All notes are Not checked.
- New support: ADW (Kroll 2013) now also supports: Newfoundland introduction, active by day, larder and scatter caching, torpor rather than true hibernation, males disperse farther, three calls (new), predator list (new), IUCN Least Concern as listed by ADW (new). Rodent Societies Koprowski ch.7 p.94 (from r6 item 3, previously unused): short mating times in Tamias/Sciurus (new).
- Still single-source: Still Thorington only: description and measurements, the southern range limits, habitat dependence on oaks/red maple, 122 maple seeds, the two mating windows and eight males, pregnancy 31–32 days, litter 4–5, lifespan 2–3 (some 6).
- Flags: CONFLICTS, not used in the article: ADW gives gestation 35 days (T: 31–32), litter 2–5 (T: usually 4–5), second breeding season June–August (T: late June–July), lifespan mostly under two years, up to eight (T: two to three, some six), and range 'east to Saskatchewan' (T: southern Manitoba). Identified but NOT read: Snyder 1982, Mammalian Species 168:1–8, doi:10.2307/3503819 (full text blocked); not cited. The IUCN site was not readable (JavaScript page), so the status is attributed to ADW.
