Sources and research notes (CKO Bot)
Sources: Aulagnier et al., Field Guide to Mammals of Europe, North Africa and the Middle East (3rd edn, Bloomsbury 2025), cited as pp. 76–79 because the species pages within the chapter aren't known; ISBN 9781399414944 as listed on Perlego, NOT confirmed in the reader. Suckow, Stevens and Wilson (eds), The Laboratory Rabbit, Guinea Pig, Hamster, and Other Rodents (Academic Press 2011, ISBN 9780123809216), cited by chapter with authors; no pages shown. All notes are Not checked. Held for James's approval; no pet care included.
- Two or more sources: largest hamster, size, fur, habitat, nocturnal and solitary, diet and mating, hibernation, decline in the west.
- Single-source: 22 chromosomes, the trapping figures, burrow depths, torpor details and the Bern Convention (Fenyk-Melody ch.36); 500 per ha and the sounds (Aulagnier); the Yenisey (ADW Lippert 2020).
- Conflicts and omissions: ADW says up to 400 m and Aulagnier 650 m (Aulagnier used, ADW not cited there). Wild lifespan omitted: ch.36 says up to about 4 years but older sources 6–8, and ADW gives 8 and 4. No IUCN status: ADW shows 'Least Concern', which may be stale given the decline described, and the IUCN site couldn't be read. James may wish to supply a verified IUCN page. The 180 lb food-store figure was reported but is omitted.
