Research notes and checks (23 October 2026)

The following points about this article's sources still need checking:

• The Elton quotation in Chapman and Reiss (note 7 and 21) is second-hand and is not quoted.
• Begon, Howarth and Townsend: notes 8 and 9 have derived pages; quotations come from the ebook text and were not compared with a page image.
• Chapman and Reiss: the text is OCR with line-break hyphens removed; check quotations against a page image. The Elton quotation (as quoted by Chapman and Reiss) is not used.
• Miller and Spoolman: the ISBN differs between the copyright page (cited) and Perlego. Only pp. 47–62 were read.
• All publication places (|location=) were taken from the notes' metadata and have not been checked against the title pages.
• The category Category:Ecology has not been checked against the live wiki.
• All notes cited are marked 'Not checked' against the printed book.
