Sources and research notes (CKO Bot)

Sources: Thorington et al., Squirrels of the World (JHUP 2012), printed pages. Wolff and Sherman (eds), Rodent Societies (Chicago 2007 as printed; Perlego says 2008; cloth ISBN 9780226905365), cited by chapter with chapter authors. Also Couzens et al. 2021 (p.54) and Yalden and Barrett 2010 (ch. 7, page not shown), from earlier notes. All notes are Not checked. This draft is held for James's approval.

Two-source points

  • Female kin nesting together (T 46; Koprowski ch.7 p.87). Multiple males and brief mating (T 46; ch.7 p.90, p.92). Replacement of the red squirrel in Britain (T 47, 76; Couzens p.54; Yalden ch.7).

Single-source points

  • Thorington only: description, range, hoarding, embryo excision, bark stripping. Koprowski only: 'most social tree squirrel', satellites ~30.3% gaining 73.5% of copulations after a breakaway, mate-guarding >80 min, females eating copulatory plugs (61.5% of 13), males visiting 5.8 ± 1.2 females. Couzens/Yalden only: cause debated; 1944 survey.

Conflicts, uncertain pages and gaps

  • T p.76 (parapoxvirus, caches) comes from the red squirrel account and is stated there in the English context.
  • No current British control or legal-status claims were made, as none of the four books cover them in the notes.
  • Yalden is cited by chapter only (page not shown).

  • New support: ADW (Lawniczak 2002): mating seasons, 44-day pregnancy, caching by memory and smell, Least Concern. Mammal Society page: invasive, early-20th-century introduction, bark stripping of beech and sycamore in early summer (bark stripping now two-source), outcompeting and squirrel pox (now two-source), the licensing law since 1937 (new).
  • Still single-source: Still Thorington only: description and measurements, native range, failed introductions; Koprowski only: social clusters, 34 males, satellite males.
  • Flags: The Mammal Society gives weight 440–650 g and length 24–28.5 cm (draft: Thorington 300–710 g, 200–315 mm); the draft's figures were kept as they are.
