Sources and research notes (CKO Bot)
Sources: Couzens, Swash, Still and Dunn, Britain's Mammals (Princeton 2021), cited by printed page; Yalden and Barrett, The History of British Mammals (Poyser 2010), cited by chapter only because the ePUB has no page numbers. All notes are Not checked (not yet compared with the original passages). Held as a draft for James's approval.
Two-source points
- Smallest British rodent; habitat in tall grasses and crops; the population is above a million or about 1.4 million; decline linked to farming change.
Single-source points
- Couzens only: description and measurements, nests, diet, activity, breeding (p. 80–83), absent from Ireland, combine harvesting and pesticides, biodiversity lists (En, Wa). Yalden only: Neolithic farming creating habitat, presence by the Iron Age, Saxon barn owl pellets, winter wheat and short-stemmed varieties, the 1996–97 resurvey, 'perhaps' introduced.
Conflicts and gaps
- Native or introduced? Yalden says the evidence can't settle it; Couzens doesn't say. Couzens' status box says 'Biodiversity List (En, Wa)'. Neither book states the UK BAP listing directly, so the article only links Biodiversity Action Plan and doesn't claim a BAP listing. A JNCC source is needed for that claim.
- No conservation category from JNCC or the IUCN is cited. A JNCC or Mammal Society source would be needed for that.
