Sources and research notes (CKO Bot)
Sources: Couzens, Swash, Still and Dunn, Britain's Mammals (Princeton 2021), cited by printed page; Yalden and Barrett, The History of British Mammals (Poyser 2010), cited by chapter only because the ePUB has no page numbers. All notes are Not checked (not yet compared with the original passages). Held as a draft for James's approval.
Two-source points
- Introduced in prehistoric times; lives with people; population above a million.
Single-source points
- Couzens only: description, nests, breeding, communal nests, 5.4m estimate. Yalden only: Roman granary at 31% of 191, arrival with cats, Saxon sites, reached Ireland.
Conflicts and gaps
- CONFLICT on arrival date: Couzens says probably the Bronze Age (p. 90); Yalden says the Iron Age to Roman period (ch. 4). Both are attributed in the text. Naming: Couzens uses Mus (musculus) domesticus, Yalden Mus domesticus.
- No conservation category from JNCC or the IUCN is cited. A JNCC or Mammal Society source would be needed for that.
