Research notes and checks (24 October 2026)

The following points about this article's sources still need checking:

  • New 24 October 2026, from Emsley (2015) and Black (2022). The opening description (French general and political leader) is a plain summary. The article title 'Napoleon' and the bold name 'Napoleon Bonaparte' are the drafter's choices; the notes use 'Napoleone Buonaparte' (birth) and 'Bonaparte'.
  • Chronology entries (Emsley notes 2, 8, 20, 27, 32, 33: Ajaccio and 15 August 1769, Brienne in April 1779, landing on Elba 3 May 1814, death 5 May 1821, burial in Les Invalides 15 December 1840) are cited as p. xvi (the reader showed one marker for the whole Chronology) and paraphrased. His death is found only in the Chronology, with no cause; none is given.
  • Approximate pages, paraphrased: Emsley notes 23, 28 and 30 (30 may be p. 24 or 25). Black notes 1, 2, 3 and 18 (approximate) are not used. Toulon and his early writings are therefore not covered.
  • Views attributed: Black on the first successful sea-borne invasion of Egypt since the Romans and on the Allies probably winning without Waterloo; Emsley on the family background, the lasting Code and administration, and his rule being more than a military dictatorship. 'Is often thought to have had a strong influence' reflects Emsley's report of others' views (note 13).
  • No graphic violence: battles are named without casualties or detail. 'In April 1814' and 'Treaty of Fontainebleau' come from the context given with Black note 26.
  • Potter, Collins, Thompson and Dillon and Garland do not cover Napoleon and are not used.
  • Black is cited as Rowman & Littlefield, year=2022 (copyright page and LoC record), ISBN 978-1-5381-6370-2 (paperback). Perlego lists the year as 2021; the mismatch is not reconciled.
  • Emsley is cited as Routledge, 2nd edn, year=2015, ISBN 978-1-138-77702-6 (pbk, as printed). Perlego lists year 2014 and ISBN 9781317610274; not reconciled. The subtitle 'Conquest, Reform and Reorganisation' comes from Perlego; check it against the title page.
  • No |location= or access-date is cited.
  • Quotation marks are used only for full-sentence exact quotations, or for terms of three words or fewer found in the notes.
  • Neutral, family-friendly: the subject died centuries ago; no graphic violence; no living people, active companies or current products are named.
  • The category Category:People has not been checked against the live wiki, nor have the See also links.
  • All notes cited are marked 'Not checked' against the printed book.
