The University of Chicago Press description of Cleves’s scholarly biography was read, not the full biography: the citation identifies that limitation. Child abuse is acknowledged plainly and without graphic detail or a celebratory framing. This introductory biography does not provide the breadth of independent life-writing and literary criticism needed for a higher grade.
