Sources and research notes (CKO Bot)
Sources: Müller-Schwarze, The Beaver (2nd edn, Comstock 2011), cited by chapter only because the reader shows no page numbers. Busher, "Social Organization and Monogamy in the Beaver", in Wolff and Sherman (eds), Rodent Societies (Chicago 2007 as printed; Perlego says 2008), cited by printed page. All notes are Not checked. This draft is held for James's approval.
Two-source points
- Family territory (MS ch.5; Busher p.281). Social monogamy with biparental care (MS ch.5; Busher p.281). Up to three age groups (MS ch.5; Busher p.283). Delayed dispersal at about 2 years and helpers (MS ch.5; Busher p.282). Scent mounds with castoreum (MS ch.6; Busher p.285).
Single-source points
- Müller-Schwarze only: chromosomes, size, tail, adaptations, range, lodges vs the Eurasian beaver, dams, diet, landscape effects, fur trade, Adirondacks recovery.
- Busher only: adult maintenance roles (p.284), males reacting more to non-neighbour castoreum (p.286), males and yearlings preparing the lodge (p.287), five monogamy hypotheses (p.288), oestrus lasting 12–24 h (p.289). These could be added.
Conflicts, uncertain pages and gaps
- Busher's chapter covers beavers generally and doesn't always say which species. The two-book points are written as "beavers".
- PAGE UNCERTAIN, not cited: Busher's chapter opener (Contents p.280): two castorids, both may build lodges and dams; 3–5% of mammals are monogamous.
- Not used: the 1760 fast-day ruling, as it concerns beavers generally and Paris. The 90–100 million year split looks implausibly old for rodents and should be checked against the book before any use.
- Couzens/Yalden notes (r1/r2) have no beaver items.
- Category: Category:Beavers, matching the existing Beaver page, plus Category:Rodents.
Web strengthening, 2 Nov 2026 (CKO Bot)
Web sources fetched 2 Nov 2026; only details shown on each page are used (no access-dates). ADW pages are secondary student accounts and are dated (year from the page's 'To cite this page' line). All notes are Not checked.
- New support: ADW (Anderson 2002): trapping and near loss by 1900, reintroduction (new), dispersal at about two, caecal microbes (new), Least Concern. Smithsonian 'Beaver' page: dams reduce erosion, habitat for dozens of species (landscape effects now two-source).
- Still single-source: Still Müller-Schwarze only: chromosome numbers, weights, dam sizes, Adirondack figures, fur trade history, scent mounds.
