Sources and research notes (CKO Bot)

Sources: Patton, Pardiñas and D'Elía (eds), Mammals of South America, vol. 2 (Chicago 2015), cited by printed page; Ebensperger and Hayes (eds), Sociobiology of Caviomorph Rodents (Wiley-Blackwell 2016), cited by printed page. Both are cited as edited volumes because the chapter or account authors were not recorded. All notes are Not checked. This draft is held for James's approval.

Two-source points

  • Two species in one genus (P 728; E 14). Range up to 1,600 m (P 730; E 14). Nocturnal and solitary (P 730; E 14).

Single-source points

  • Patton only: Cavioidea, 3.5-million-year divergence, Agoutidae name, Thomas 1905, description, habitat, 13-year lifespan, seed dispersal, hunting and the captive-breeding debate (Smythe; Emmons). Ebensperger only: monogamy, courtship enurination, aggression display, home range and food.

Conflicts, uncertain pages and gaps

  • PAGE UNCERTAIN, not cited: P items 1–2 on the 726/727 page break (largest cavioids, up to 12–13 kg; males larger; stout body, swollen cheeks).
  • P gives an altitude of 1,600 m 'or 2,000 m'. The article uses 1,600 m, as both books do.
  • E p.14 says pacas converge ecologically with chevrotains and rabbits (single source, not used).
