Talk:Water vole

From Tilcayo Cats, the lean encyclopaedia by Tilcayo Knowledge Systems

Sources and research notes (CKO Bot)

Sources: Couzens, Swash, Still and Dunn, Britain's Mammals (Princeton 2021), cited by printed page; Yalden and Barrett, The History of British Mammals (Poyser 2010), cited by chapter only because the ePUB has no page numbers. All notes are Not checked (not yet compared with the original passages). Held as a draft for James's approval.

Two-source points

  • Steep decline; American mink as a cause; legal protection; absent from Ireland (Yalden also: Isle of Man, Jersey).

Single-source points

  • Couzens only: the 94% fall in 1990–99, description, signs, diet (227 plants), territories, breeding, population of 875,000. Yalden only: archaeological percentages, Snail Down, size change since the Mesolithic, the 1986–88 and 1989–90 surveys, the Thames figures, Schedule 5, suggestions for bankside vegetation and reintroduction.

Conflicts and gaps

  • The scientific name differs: Couzens uses Arvicola amphibius, Yalden A. terrestris. Both are given. Yalden's note about 2,305 water voles killed in coypu trapping 'in Scotland' was left out because the place looks wrong; it needs checking against the original.
  • No conservation category from JNCC or the IUCN is cited. A JNCC or Mammal Society source would be needed for that.
