Research notes and checks (24 October 2026)

The following points about this article's sources still need checking:

  • New 24 October 2026. SINGLE SOURCE: every statement rests on Wrigley (2002), an A–Z reference companion (ABC-CLIO), mostly its chronology (pp. 343–347). A second, checked source is recommended before publishing.
  • NOBEL PRIZE YEAR NOT GIVEN: no chronology note in the report states the year. Note 36 (p. 58) gives only the Stockholm ceremony on 10 December; the researcher inferred 1953 from the Bermuda Conference entry. The article says only that he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature. Note 36 does not say Mary Soames was his daughter, so the article does not either.
  • The opening description (British politician, soldier and writer) is a plain summary. The notes do not give the date his first term as Prime Minister ended; the 1945 election defeat is reported without saying he left office. Glosses (First Lord of the Admiralty; 'at the value it had before the war' for prewar parity) are the drafter's.
  • Note 29 records 'blood, toil, tears, and sweat', but as a partial chronology quotation it is paraphrased ('offering nothing but hard work and sacrifice'), which is looser than the original. Consider restoring the quotation once checked.
  • Debate and evaluations, as far as the notes support: Wrigley on his firm law-and-order line as Home Secretary (note 18) and on the heavy criticism of the 1925 Gold Standard decision, including by Keynes (note 25); Wrigley on him seeking fame through books (note 9). No wider controversies are covered because the notes do not record them.
  • No graphic war detail: the Omdurman cavalry charge (note 7), the Dardanelles and the wars are mentioned without detail. Note 11 (London to Ladysmith, lecture tours) is not used. The Violet Bonham Carter remark (p. xxi) was not recorded as a numbered fact and is not used. His place of death is not in the notes.
  • Wrigley is cited as ABC-CLIO, 2002, series ABC-CLIO Biographical Companions, ISBN 0-87436-990-8 (hard cover), as printed on p. iv. Perlego matches (ABC-CLIO, 2002); no mismatch. ABC-CLIO is a reference publisher, not a university press.
  • No |location= or access-date is cited.
  • Quotation marks are used only for full-sentence exact quotations, or for terms of three words or fewer found in the notes.
  • Neutral, family-friendly: the subject died centuries ago; no graphic violence; no living people, active companies or current products are named.
  • The category Category:People has not been checked against the live wiki, nor have the See also links.
  • All notes cited are marked 'Not checked' against the printed book.
