Notes on the family tree
- Heremod is mentioned as a previous king of the Danes, but his connection to the named Scyldings isn't specified.
- Scyld's son Beowulf is a separate figure than the title character of the poem, and known by other names in other sources, such as Beaw in the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle.
- There is a lacuna in the line referring to Healfdene's daughter, omitting her name and the start of the name of the Scylfing king to whom she is married. Her husband's name ends in -ela and he is therefore almost certainly Onela, but her name is unknown. Malone (1929) proposed the name Yrse for alliterative reasons, but this is debated amongst editors.[1]
- Hrothulf is Hrothgar's nephew, and generally taken to be Halga's son because of other sources, although his parentage isn't explicit in the text of Beowulf itself.
