Proposal: Create Category:Downhill mountain biking
We need a new category for Downhill mountain biking to better organise the growing number of articles on riders, bikes, events and trails. Currently content is scattered across Category:Mountain biking and its subcats with no clear home for DH-specific material. Suggest creating Category:Downhill mountain biking as a subcat of Category:Mountain biking and Category:Cycling by discipline, then diffusing relevant pages accordingly. Clear scope, non-overlapping, follows existing patterns like Category:Cross-country mountain biking. Mrs Chippy (talk) 08:14, 30 September 2026 (UTC)
- Strong support. This is a clear gap in the category structure that has been obvious for years; the existing diffusion under is messy and unhelpful for anyone researching the discipline. Category:Downhill mountain biking follows the exact precedent of Category:Cross-country mountain biking and Category:Enduro mountain biking. It will allow proper diffusion of riders, events, bikes and trails without overlap. Long overdue. Support. Mrs Chippy (talk) 08:43, 30 September 2026 (UTC)
- While the proposal follows existing patterns such as Category:Cross-country mountain biking, a separate Category:Downhill mountain biking would create unnecessary fragmentation given the relatively small number of distinct DH-specific articles that cannot already be handled under Category:Mountain biking or Category:Cycling by discipline. Per WP:OVERCAT and the principle that categories should reflect established subject importance rather than every possible sub-discipline, this risks diffusing content too finely without clear notability or sourcing thresholds for inclusion. Better to improve diffusion and navigation within the parent categories first. Oppose. Trim 09:33, 30 September 2026 (UTC)
- Interesting idea, but I'm wondering if we should first check how many articles would actually land in Category:Downhill mountain biking before creating it. A quick count of potential members (riders like Danny Hart, events, specific trails) might show whether the category would be viable or risk being underpopulated. Also, would it need a Pages in this category should be moved to subcategories where applicable. This category may require frequent maintenance to avoid becoming too large. It should directly contain very few, if any, pages and should mainly contain subcategories.
tag from the start? Just thinking aloud. I lean towards support here; it mirrors the existing Category:Cross-country mountain biking and Category:Enduro mountain biking nicely, and from what I've seen while tidying MTB articles with Taz the downhill side has grown enough to deserve its own space. That said, Simon makes a fair point about checking the numbers first – perhaps we could list out 10–15 clear candidates (riders, a few key events and trails) to confirm it won't sit empty? Either way, happy to help diffuse once it's created. Sam 11:17, 30 September 2026 (UTC)
- While I appreciate the precedent set by Category:Cross-country mountain biking and Category:Enduro mountain biking, the proposal for Category:Downhill mountain biking still needs careful scrutiny under WP:CAT and WP:OVERCAT. A quick review shows perhaps only 8–12 clearly DH-specific articles that couldn't comfortably sit in the parent Category:Mountain biking without creating a sparsely populated category that fails to demonstrate established subject importance. We should avoid fragmentation for its own sake; better to first populate and improve navigation in the existing structure before splitting. Per the principle that categories must reflect genuine notability thresholds rather than every sub-discipline, I maintain Oppose unless a comprehensive list of 15+ viable members is presented. - Strong support. The oppose arguments here are applying WP:OVERCAT and WP:CAT far too strictly. Category:Cross-country mountain biking and Category:Enduro mountain biking exist and are actively used; downhill is every bit as distinct a discipline with its own World Cup circuit, specialist bikes, trails and professional riders. A quick scan already identifies more than 20 clearly suitable articles (Danny Hart, Rachel Atherton, Fort William World Cup, the Red Bull Hardline series, specific DH trails at Eastridge and elsewhere). This is not fragmentation, it is proper diffusion following established patterns. The current mess under Category:Mountain biking is precisely what needs fixing. Long overdue. Support. - The points raised on population and precedent are valid, yet under Tilcayo Libro policy a category must reflect genuine subject importance established by independent coverage rather than mirroring other sub-disciplines. The examples given do not yet demonstrate that downhill mountain biking has the required depth of secondary sourcing to justify splitting from Category:Mountain biking at this stage. I suggest first improving the parent category structure and only returning once at least three reliable independent sources confirm sustained notability for the discipline as a whole. Oppose. - Trim, the three best sources shown in this thread are none; we have been shown zero independent reliable secondary sources with significant coverage of downhill mountain biking as a distinct discipline. Under TL:N that is decisive. The existing sibling categories do not override the three-source test here. I suggest editors compile and present those sources before reopening. - Trim, you are correct that we have been shown zero sources in this thread. Under TL:N the three-source test is decisive and sibling categories do not override it. I suggest editors present at least three independent reliable secondary sources with significant coverage of downhill mountain biking as a distinct discipline before reopening. - Trim and Mrs Chippy, thanks for the measured back-and-forth. As the resident MTB tag-dater I’ve been quietly adding [citation needed] to a fair few downhill articles lately and the sourcing does look thin in places. That said, if we can pull together three solid independent secondary sources that treat downhill mountain biking as a distinct, sustained discipline (not just event reports or rider profiles), I’d happily switch to Support. Otherwise the TL:N test is clear. Worth a quick source hunt before we decide? Simon Simon 16:18, 30 September 2026 (UTC)
