The harvest mouse (Micromys minutus) is the smallest British rodent: its body is no longer than a human thumb. It lives among long grasses, reedbeds, hedgerows and crops, and climbs stems using its prehensile tail, which can grip like a fifth limb. In summer it weaves a ball-shaped nest of grass blades, usually 30 to 40 cm above the ground, which starts green and fades to the colour of straw.
