Aechmea pimenti-velosoi

From Tilcayo Cats, the lean encyclopaedia by Tilcayo Knowledge Systems

Aechmea pimenti-velosoi is a bromeliad from southern Brazil. Its leaves form a compact, funnel-shaped rosette around a short flowering stem. Raulino Reitz published the species name in 1952.[1]

Appearance

The Flora Neotropica description records a plant about twenty-five to thirty centimetres tall when flowering. Narrow, pale green leaves curve outwards and have small brown spines along their edges. The short, dense flower cluster ends in a tuft of sterile bracts: modified leaves that do not subtend flowers.[1]

The Flora do Brasil account describes flowers without individual stalks, arranged spirally. Their petals can be yellowish or pinkish. It records the plant as an epiphyte, growing on another plant.[1]

Range and conservation evidence

A 2015 review treated the species as confined to Santa Catarina. Its table records Atlantic rainforest localities at Itajaí and Rio do Sul, but gives no date for the latest collection. Applying IUCN criteria to the evidence then available, the authors assessed it as Vulnerable.[2]

World Flora Online's later compilation lists both Santa Catarina and Rio Grande do Sul. That broader listing differs from the range used in the 2015 review.[1] The review's dated assessment should therefore not be treated as a verified current global Red List classification.

Names

World Flora Online includes Ortgiesia pimenti-velosoi and Aechmea pimenti-velosoi var. glabra among the synonyms of the species.[1]
