Burmese ferret-badger
The Burmese ferret-badger, also called the large-toothed ferret-badger (Melogale personata), is a small Asian member of the weasel family, Mustelidae. Isidore Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire described it in 1831. Modern classifications separate it from the Javan ferret-badger, which some older accounts included within it.[1]
Appearance
The animal has a long body, short legs, conspicuous claws and a bushy tail. A University of Michigan account gives a head-and-body length of 33–43 cm and a tail length of 15–23 cm. Dark and pale head markings contrast with the grey-brown body.[2]
External markings are not a dependable way to separate this species from the small-toothed ferret-badger, Melogale moschata. Researchers use features of the skull and teeth; many photographs identify only the genus.[3]
Distribution and field evidence
The species occurs in mainland South and Southeast Asia. Its 2016 IUCN assessment described a poorly documented distribution and warned that identification difficulties obscure both range and population information.[4]
A skull photographed in central Laos in July 2011 provided a confirmed record from Nakai–Nam Theun National Protected Area. The large upper fourth premolar and other skull features supported identification. A small-toothed ferret-badger had been recorded about 12 km away. The authors suggested the species could occur together, rather than demonstrating that both had been observed at the same spot.[3]
Habitat and conservation
Records include forest and modified habitats. The 2016 IUCN assessment classified the species as Least Concern, while recording its population trend as unknown. The assessment drew partly on its likely broad distribution and use of altered environments; the category should not be mistaken for a detailed population count. Non-selective snaring is a concern in parts of the range.[4]
