Gerard David

From Tilcayo Cats, the lean encyclopaedia by Tilcayo Knowledge Systems

Gerard David (about 1460–1523) was an Early Netherlandish painter who worked chiefly in Bruges. He was born at Oudewater in the northern Netherlands and died in Bruges.[1]

David's workshop produced religious paintings, including altarpieces and smaller works intended for private devotion. Some incorporate portraits of their patrons. The close attention to detail in his oil paintings drew on earlier Netherlandish artists, including Jan van Eyck.[1]

He may also have maintained a second workshop in Antwerp late in his career; the National Galleries of Scotland presents this as a possibility. His Wedding at Cana is held by the Louvre.[1][2]
