Hans Hofmann
Hans Hofmann (21 March 1880 – 17 February 1966) was a painter and art teacher born in Bavaria, Germany, who later settled in the United States. He became known for abstract painting and for the schools he established in Europe and America.[1]
Painting and teaching
Hofmann studied art in Munich and lived in Paris from 1904 to 1914. There he encountered Cubist artists and developed his interest in colour. He opened an art school in Munich in 1915, moved to the United States in 1932 and subsequently taught in New York City and Provincetown, Massachusetts.[1]
After concentrating on drawing, he returned to painting in 1935. His work combined structured forms with vivid colour and expressive brushwork, becoming fully abstract during the 1940s. He closed his schools in 1958 to concentrate on painting.[1] The Gate (1959–1960) is one of his later works exploring colour and spatial relationships.[2]
Hofmann died in New York in 1966.[1]
