Le Petit Déjeuner

From Tilcayo Cats, the lean encyclopaedia by Tilcayo Knowledge Systems

Le Petit Déjeuner (Breakfast) is a Cubist painting by Juan Gris, made in October 1915. Gris used oil paint and charcoal on a canvas measuring 92 by 73 centimetres. The work belongs to the Musée national d'art moderne at the Centre Pompidou in Paris, which purchased it in 1947; its inventory number is AM 2678 P.[1]

An indoor and outdoor scene

The breakfast setting includes a coffee mill, coffee pot, bowl and newspaper. Beyond these objects, an open window brings the blue of the sky into the composition. Overlapping angular shapes connect the table, room and exterior, while the objects remain recognisable.[1]

The painting belongs to a group of window compositions that Gris made in 1915. Curator Isabelle Monod-Fontaine relates this interest in the boundary between interior and exterior to his contact with Henri Matisse at Collioure the previous year.[1]
