Street with Flags
Street with Flags (French: La Rue pavoisée) is a 1906 oil painting by Raoul Dufy. It shows a street in Le Havre decorated with flags for the French national holiday. The canvas measures 81 by 65 centimetres and belongs to the Musée national d'art moderne at the Centre Pompidou in Paris, inventory AM 4113 P.[1]
Colour and composition
Dufy worked in Le Havre with Albert Marquet during the summer of 1906 and painted several versions of the flag-decorated street. In this picture, a large French flag occupies the foreground, contrasting with the green and pink buildings beyond. The museum's commentary explains that the prominent flag emphasises the flat surface of the painting, despite the street's receding perspective.[1]
Collection
Dufy kept the painting throughout his life. It entered the national collection through his widow's bequest in 1963.[1]
