Usage
Add {{Very long|date=October 2026}} to the top of the article, below any hatnotes.
smallparameter{{Very long|small=left|date=October 2026}}generates the following smaller-sized template, a left-size box instead of a banner (which is usually only of use with|section=, below):File:Edit-clear.svg This section is too long. Consider splitting it into new pages, adding subheadings, or condensing it. (October 2026)- Section-specific use
- If just a particular section of an article is getting long, it can be tagged by adding the
|section=parameter, or using the{{Very long section}}template variant: {{Very long section}}and{{Very long|section|small=left|date=October 2026}}both render:This section may be too long to read and navigate comfortably.- Readable prose size (in words)
- The readable prose size in words, calculated with the help of tools like Prosesize or enwiki contributor, can be added manually to the template:
{{Very long|words=7,000}}generates the following template:This page may be too long to read and navigate comfortably. When this tag was added, its readable prose size was 7,000 words. (October 2026)
nosplitparameter- Adding
|nosplit=yes(or any other value for that parameter, such as y or true) will suppress mention of splitting the material to new sub-articles, since not all content is suitable for splitting (usually because it would fail WP:Notability as a stand-alone article).
- Reason parameter
- Adding
|reason=your reason herewill add a new second sentence to the banner reading:- The specific problem is: your reason here. (bolded, as shown)
- Final punctuation is provided, you do not need to include it.
- Categorization
- This template adds tagged articles to Category:Articles that may be too long, or one of its dated subcategories.
| This page in a nutshell: Decisions are made by discussion, weighed by the strength of policy-based arguments, not by counting heads. If you are reverted, stop and discuss. Consensus cannot override policy. |
How it works
- Be bold, once. Make the edit you think is right. If nobody objects, that is consensus.
- If you are reverted, discuss. Don't restore your edit. Start a thread on the talk page, explain your reasons with sources and policies, and wait for replies.
- Arguments, not votes. Whoever closes a discussion weighs the arguments against policy. Comments that ignore policy, repeat others or come from connected or paid editors without disclosure carry little or no weight.
- Consensus cannot override policy. No local agreement can keep a non-notable topic, allow an unsourced claim or relax the rules for living people or paid work.
- It can change. A past decision can be revisited when there are new sources or arguments, but not by repeating the same request until people give up.
Edit warring
Undoing another editor's change more than once on the same page in 24 hours, without discussion, is edit warring (Wikipedia allows three reverts; we allow one). It may lead to protection of the page or a block. Exceptions: reverting obvious vandalism, removing BLP violations and copyright infringement, and reverting banned or blocked users. Report edit warring at the edit warring noticeboard.
Getting more views
If a talk page discussion is stuck, ask for a third opinion, raise it at the relevant noticeboard, or at the village pump for wider questions. Ask once, in one place, in neutral words. Discussions that need a formal close can be listed at Closure requests. There is no arbitration committee and no formal mediation: if discussion fails, an administrator decides on policy grounds.
