Vachellia dolichocephala
Vachellia dolichocephala is a small African tree in the pea family, Fabaceae. Kew records its native range from South Sudan to northeastern Tanzania, in seasonally dry tropical environments.[1]
Description and habitat
The Flora of Tropical East Africa describes trees 4–7.5 metres tall. Their flattened, purplish-brown pods are 5.5–10 cm long, straight or slightly curved, and split open when mature. The seeds are olive-green and somewhat flattened. The account records riverine woodland and rocky hills at approximately 1,150–1,520 metres; these are regional collection records.[1]
Name
The earlier name Acacia dolichocephala Harms belongs to this species.[2] The combination in Vachellia was published by Kyalangalilwa and Boatwright in 2013.[3]
The name Acacia dolichocephala is ambiguous without its author: Safford used the same name for a different plant, now treated as Vachellia sphaerocephala.[4]
