Venetian Gala Concert
Venetian Gala Concert is a 1782 painting on canvas by Francesco Guardi. It measures 67.7 by 90.5 centimetres and belongs to the Alte Pinakothek in Munich, inventory number 8574.[1]
The event
The senate of Venice commissioned Guardi to record the visit of the Russian Grand Duke and Duchess in January 1782. The painting depicts a concert by the choir and orchestra of the Ospedale della Pietà in the Old Procurators' Offices. The visiting couple are seated opposite the musicians' gallery.[1]
The museum's account of its 2022–2023 exhibition Eleganz, Schauspiel und Natur places this work among depictions of actual festivities, while drawing attention to Guardi's loose brushwork and the lively atmosphere it creates.[2]
Collection
The painting was purchased from the London art trade in 1909.[1]
