Featured article

The tilcayo (Leopardus tilcayo), or tilcayo tiger cat, is a small wild cat of the genus Leopardus found in Bolivia. It was identified through a genetic study of tiger cats published in September 2026, which made it the first living cat species to be formally described since 1923. Local communities already knew the animal by that name; in appearance it resembles other tiger cats such as the oncilla, and it was only the 2026 study that documented it as a genetically distinct population. Quick, quiet and rarely seen, it also gave Tilcayo Cats its name.
