Lawrence Ferlinghetti

Lawrence Ferlinghetti (1919–2021) was a poet, publisher, painter and activist based in San Francisco, California. His work extended across writing, publishing and the visual arts.[1]

Writing and art

Ferlinghetti studied journalism at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and completed a doctorate in comparative literature at the University of Paris. In the 1950s he established the City Lights publishing house in San Francisco.[1]

His publications include After the Cries of the Birds, issued by Dave Haselwood in 1967.[2] He also painted throughout his life and exhibited his work in the United States. His papers at the Smithsonian’s Archives of American Art include correspondence, exhibition records, sketches, sketchbooks and photographs. He died in 2021.[1]
